Living the Dream No Matter Where You Are

In 2012, I moved to Istanbul, Turkey. Here is my story of how a 25-year old dream became a reality.

For nearly 25 years, I had a dream of living abroad. I spent a semester in England during college and loved it. The idea of living and working abroad seemed exotic, adventurous, and filled with unlimited opportunities. But then life happened. There was work, a husband, children, and a myriad of commitments that never seemed to end. A few years ago an unexpected life change afforded me the opportunity to reconnect with the dream I had crafted long before. The end of my marriage was not a welcome change, but looking back on it now, it was a huge gift in my life.

I moved to Istanbul, Turkey in 2012. People ask me how I did it. The funny thing is that I never worried about the how. Once I made the the decision to go, the rest took take care of itself. I will share the process of the steps I took to make my dream come true.

My time in Istanbul was amazing. It was all I thought it would be and more. But Istanbul is not the end of my dreams. Rather it was a beginning. I have learned a lot about myself this past year. I now know the feeling I had there is available to me no matter where I am. I have come to realize that it is not about Istanbul specifically, but rather me stepping into who I am. It isn't about leaving where you are. It is about being open to be who you are no matter where you are.
